to realise that the pain in my left arm and the odd rash is almost certainly shingles. Still it is in my left side not all over my back .

I'm now on Tumblr as Rhaderad if anyone wants to find me. I managed to find three of you. Yay.

(I hadn't realised I'd set anything up but they started emailing me so I must have at some time in the past.) This internet thing is amazing. *G*.

It's that time of year. Again! [Oct. 29th, 2013|01:55 pm]

Today I made Christmas cakes. Last Friday I went to a workshop at Spitalfields City Farm, chatted to some friendly people, and made a hat - big needles and chunky wool - which I gave to one of the other attendees who came to learn to knit and make herself a winter hat. Took about 4 hours and I have the pattern if anyone wants one.

I have also knitted a jumper for the little boy next door's 1st birthday.

So I am feeling a little pleased with myself.

More progress [Oct. 17th, 2013|10:39 pm]

[mood |excitedexcited]

Yesterday I managed another fast day. I put up the floating shelf I bought for the kitchen back in August from IKEA, including scaring cats with drill noise, moved the cookbooks and the pot of rosemary on to it. So I'm feeling a sense of achievement. Shelf is shiny dark grey which looks good over my dark grey magnetic paint noticeboard. I also took another step towards installing the kitchen blinds by cutting down the poles - not quite enough but hey.

Today, I took some more playscripts to Bloomsbury Auctions. Over the years I collected a lot of signed scripts mostly ones printed to accompany a particular production and mostly Almeida and RSC -I gave them 24 earlier and found another 3. This includes a copy of the first Almeida production under Ian McDiarmid and Jonathan Kent of Scenes from an Execution signed by Glenda Jackson, Iceman Cometh signed by all the Almeida cast including Kevin Spacey, and my Arden Titus Andronicus signed by Patrick Stewart so we're hoping for a good return. I decided to also give them the two Nonesuch Press editions I had of plays by Farquhar & Otway. These are limited editions printed on good quality paper. They'll tell me when the auction is happening in December so I plan to tweet the info and ask for retweeting. This will be an auction specially for theatricalia and magic.

So we'll see how that goes.

Officially heading for winter [Oct. 11th, 2013|05:26 pm]

[mood |calmcalm]

It's 20C in my living room but my hands are cold while I type. Last night I drew the living room curtains as soon as it went dark to reduce heat loss for the first time since April, and made myself a hot water bottle.

This morning I switched my summer & winter trousers between drawer and wardrobe. Cold is here. Next step is to get my winter jacket and long sleeved tops out.

Ah well as we are into October it's not a bad run for decent temperatures this year.

What have I done so far in 2013? [Aug. 20th, 2013|03:14 pm]

[mood |pleasedpleased]

I am currently trying to organise myself; set some routines, including posting; improve my fitness and stop wasting time by drifting along.

So this first post in ages is to list what I have managed to do this year so far as an encouragement to continue. Not necessarily in any order:
- cleared out all the self-recorded videos which I will never transfer to PC: there were about 8 bags of them
- had another go at my wardrobe and other bits & pieces, and books taken to Oxfam
- created an address book (yeah paper & pen) for all the online memberships so I can find which email/password I'm using
- sorted and sold the small amount of odd bits of gold jewellery I had - just before the price dropped. Astounded it was worth £40
- sorted and listed all my signed playscripts and taken them to Bloomsbury Auctions - conservative estimate £150-200 AND about 30cm of free shelf space.
- arranged to trade down on my Sky TV account (done today & they gave me a further special offer reduction!)
- bought a tablet - need help! - and switched to John Lewis broadband so 6 month reduction on that too.
- moved my futon sofa/bed out and moved 3 seater from neighbours in (anyone want sofa? teak frame.)
- used metal based paint to create magnetic notice board in the kitchen so I could throw out the cork one
- finished sewing tabs on straight curtains so ready to hang as roman blinds in kitchen
- sorted out bits so can fix blinds
- finally booked a 'going away' holiday in Cornwall at the beginning of October - quilting weekend here http://bedruthan.com/ Current tentative plan is to switch to nearby Travelodge(s) before and after to visit Eden Project & Tintagel.
- saw the Tiger Territory at London Zoo; planned to visit Whipsnade with ruric second week of September
- book to see RII (Tennant) & Coriolanus (Hiddlestone) through Live showings at local cinema
- got my TfL 60+ card in April so free travel *Yay* & ID for cheap tickets
- did a little bit of family history work on my grandfather - summarising all the info we had - this needs a plan of action for further research to minimise travel & costs
- did a Guardian Masterclass on Mystery Writing which led to a) a lot more thought about getting stuck in & writing; b) an invite to one of the tutors, William Ryan's book launch (The Twelfth Department, 3rd in his series about Korolev, Moscow detective working in Stalinist Russia. I've read all of them. Thoroughly recommend) and c) a lovely evening Crime in the Court organised by Goldsboro Books where I got to chat to a lot of thriller writers and came away with a list to read.
- finally had a trip, thanks to neighbours, to IKEA so have new bed base to fit
- booked tickets for Vampire Ball
- made marmalade and strawberry jam
- began to list hardbacks to see if Goldsboro interested in any
- tried to make more of an effort to meet up with friends
- got motorbike serviced, MoT'd, taxed & insured - still haven't ridden it other than to bring it back though!

I have also done a bit of theatre going, Almeida ushering - including an afternoon looking after 4 beautiful guide dogs while their owners enjoyed an audio-described performance - and cinema trips.

Oh and I managed to fall off my loft stairs and knock myself sideways trying to carry stuff and stop Mac going into the loft. Sigh. Lesson learned: "Do not wrestle with cat while on stairs."

Looking at the list like this makes me feel I've achieved more than I thought.

Peter Brook still a star [Apr. 29th, 2013|11:48 pm]

When I started going to the theatre Peter Brook was creating new and challenging productions at the RSC. I did manage to see his Midsummer Night's Dream when it came to Liverpool, read and bought his books and finally got to see an original production when The Mahabharata came to the Tramshed in Glasgow. That was an amazing event.

This evening he gave a talk at the National (OK promoting his latest book "The Quality of Mercy") and is as sharp and challenging as ever. I did attend a talk he did at the Barbican. Him sitting on the front of the stage talking to a full theatre trying, and failing, to explain to an earnest drama student that what was happening then and there was the theatre he always spoke about. Tonight he reminded us that theatre is always alive in the present so if it is good, it is good. Which probably sounds overly simplistic but I get what he means.

He was also asked by Mark Lawson (interviewer) to comment on "who wrote Shakespeare". He says Shakespeare and that the challenge to this which only started in the 19thC is due to social snobbery. What's developed is down to the principle of lawyers. Someone comes to a lawyer and asks him to take a case. The lawyer knows there is a chance his client is guilty but has to defend him so carries out all the research to support his argument. Each time someone takes up the idea of not-Shakespearethey have to research to support their case and so it becomes a vested interest.

I now have a signed copy of that book and of my copy of The Empty Space so I'm pleased. Even more delighted that, while I was queuing for the autographs I spotted a vaguely familiar face a long way behind me - the queue was snaked around the display boards in the Lyttleton Circle foyer - and tentatively asked if it was indeed Nolan Hemmings. He, aged 16, had been in the Mahabharata so I wasn't sure. It was and we had a really nice chat - or series of chats interrupted by queue movement. I guess, from his reaction, that despite it being a big theatre event and hard to get tickets, not that many people saw it. But it was something special, and something else, so we could reminisce about its importance to both of us. He's a very nice man.

Latest scam calls - power saving [Feb. 12th, 2013|11:31 am]

[Tags|]

I've now had 2 calls from an Indian call centre trying to get me to buy a power saving device which 'plugs into the electricity between the meter and appliances and provides an even level of supply reducing your consumption'.

They seem very confused when I start trying to explain that there are 4 separate circuits in my flat so plugging their device into one won't affect the others, and that the power is on a loop. Never thought O level physics could be so much fun.

First guy who rang listened and when I'd finished admitted what I was saying made sense; second guy just rang off.
